Supporting DIS Applications Using ATM Multipoint Connection Caching

چکیده
This report describes an ATM Multipoint Connection Caching strategy (AMCC) to control the explosive growth of traffic within the network and at an endpoint in a large Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) application such as a battlefield simulation. For very large DIS applications with 100,000 entities, the current method of broadcasting information among entities will no longer be feasible due to computational and network bandwidth limitations. Our scheme divides the simulation space into grids and each grid square or a set of grid squares forms a multicast group. Entities join the groups within their perception range and thus, they receive state updates only from entities within their perception range. AMCC utilizes the unique capabilities of our dynamic multipoint ATM signaling protocol, CMAP. We have implemented AMCC and have successfully demonstrated a small DIS battlefield simulation application running over our ATM testbed. ... Read complete abstract on page 2.

The use of a high bandwidth multicast is becoming widespread in today's network applications. Many of these applications use multicast groups with dynamic membership such as multi-media conferencing, multi-media broadcasting and multi-media distributed data bases. ATM UNI 3.1 and 4.0 protocols o er the point-to-multipoint connection type that enables multicast over native ATM. Point-to-multipoi...

ulticasting is growing in importance as new applications are devised. Throughout this article, multicasting is understood as the efficient multipoint-to-multipoint transmission of information (in terms of network resource consumption) between the members of a group. In particular, the focus is on the problems of deploying the multicast service in an ATM environment. ATM has been widely deployed...

This paper proposes a multipoint-to-multipoint mul-ticast architecture for ATM networks. The necessity for such an architecture stems from the scalability requirements , both in terms of state to be maintained in the network and in terms of the group population dynamics, of a wide range of networking applications. We argue that approaches of using multicast servers or meshes of point-to-multipo...

Upcoming applications have demanding communication needs. One requirement is the provision of a reliable high performance multipoint communication service. If a reliable service in ATM networks is based on traditional transport protocols like TCP, severe performance degradations may be observed. Additional problems occur for the provision of a reliable multipoint service, where errors occur mor...

Multipoint-to-multipoint communication can be implemented by combining the point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-point connection algorithms. In an ATM multipoint-to-point connection, multiple sources send data to the same destination on a shared tree. Traffic from multiple branches is merged into a single stream after every merge point. It is sometimes impossible for the network to determine a...
